Notes and History
ME 201 (ME 201SH) as originally designated in 1925 ran between Naples at NEI 18 (now US 302) and Harrison at ME 117. After the advent of US highways in Maine in 1926, this routing was renumbered to ME 213 (and now is part of ME 35) to avoid an obvious numbering collision, and apparently retired ... until, unbelievably, it was resurrected in 1937-8 between Richmond Corners and near Bowdoinham intersecting US 201 itself on both ends. Obviously a routing like that was clearly a manoeuvre to propose an alternate alignment for US 201, but it was ultimately never approved by AASHTO (thus having nothing to do with modern US 201A) and the ME 201 routing was transferred to ME 138 instead in 1946-7.
