Notes and History
ME 138 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Benton at ME 100 (now ME 11/ME 100) and Hampden at NEI 1 (later US 1, now US 1A). In 1931, this routing was extended south along an alternate alignment from Unity to Albion and Augusta with the last leg partially cosigned with ME 102 (now ME 3/ME 9/US 202), and the orphaned alignment to Benton added as a western extension to ME 139. After the Maine Great Renumbering, all of the previous routing was assigned to ME 9 (now ME 9/US 202), including the portion with ME 102 which became ME 3/ME 9 (and is now ME 3/ME 9/US 202); the ME 138 designation then lapsed until 1946-7 when it was used for the former ME 201SH, its routing today.
