Notes and History |
ME 190 has always occupied roughly
its current routing since its initial designation in
1925 between Perry at NEI 1 (now US 1) and its terminus at the end of the
peninsula in Eastport as one
of the designated spurs of former lettered
highway N.
However, its original terminus was at Mahar Ln and
US 1, not the present Route 190/US 1 intersection,
which can be seen on the
1945 topo
(warning: large image). From there, it proceeded
along the southern edge of the Cobscook Bay inlet along what is now
signed Old Eastport Rd to a now obliterated crossing, entered Quoddy as Old
Toll Bridge Rd (and partially signed as Old ME 190, helpfully, on NAVTEQ), and
joined the modern mainline on its bypass alignment just east of Quoddy to
enter Eastport; this too is seen on the 1945 topo.
It is not obvious exactly when the rerouting off the
old bridge occurred or when the bridge itself was destroyed, nor the
change in terminus, but the US 1 bridge over the Little River
carries a 1956 date (see US 1) and the
current routings of both US 1 and ME 190 are seen by 1967 on the
general atlas.
