Notes and History |
ME 18 was the reincarnation of NEI 18 after the signage of US highways in Maine
in 1926, running between Portland at US 1 and the New Hampshire state line
at Fryeburg via Raymond and Bridgton, where it continued as NH 18. Although
it was apparently co-routed with ME 100 into Portland, neither route
probably extended to what is now ME 77 where ME 100 does today; in fact,
it's not at all clear where their exact terminus actually was. See
US 302 for more conjecture.
ME 18 represents former lettered highway B. In 1935, the designation was decommissioned and the entire routing became new US highway US 302. Although the ME 18 designation persisted as "co-signage" on the 1936 map, this seems to be because the 1936 map was actually a recycled 1935 map with spot edits, and ME 18 doesn't appear in the route log. See also US 302. |
