Notes and History |
ME 22, a small highway serving the Portland metropolitan region, was
first designated in 1939 along new routing.
Its terminus in Portland is a little odd; it actually follows US 1 along
Park Avenue and terminates at State St. This has always been its eastern end
(presently at ME 77), but this is somewhat unusual today as State St is
now one-way only and Park Avenue is one-way near I-295 (so Park Avenue should
really be "ME 22W" and ME 22 routed on Congress St -- interestingly, the
AADT counts do have a route 22W).
ME 22's western end was originally at US 202 near Buxton. The extension
to ME 35 and Saco Rd, its terminus now, occurred in 1958.
Curiously, ME 22's signed ending is at former US 1, at the junction of
Congress and St John. This is somewhat more logical in the present day,
although this might disappear since US 1 no longer runs there.
ME 25 and ME 26 have similar discontinuities between their signed and
administrative ends.

Exit 46 to ME 9 and ME 22 in Portland along the Maine Turnpike/I-95, showing typical exit convention. Note use of kilometres. Many Turnpike exits only obliquely connect with their intended destinations due to toll plaza exit configurations. |
