Notes and History |
ME 121 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Auburn at ME 100
(now ME 4/ME 100/US 202, at the corners of
Court St, Minot Ave and Union St) and Welchville near Mechanic Falls
at NEI 26 (now ME 26).
After the Maine Great Renumbering, it was extended southwest on new routing
through Otisfield and Casco
to Raymond and US 302; this routing
remained constant until 1957, when it was extended along the east side of
US 302's old alignment in Raymond on Main St to the new US 302 bypass.
This remains its routing today. Due to the presence of ME 11, its terminus
in Auburn is now a useless multiplex.

ME 11 and ME 121 in Mechanic Falls, westbound (the sign at right says "Lewiston, Auburn, Augusta, [unintelligible]" and a right arrow), in the 1940s. This is just west of the old truss bridge over the Little Androscoggin River. Compare this with the next photograph, in particular the Rexall Drug sign which we will use as a reference point. ME 11 and ME 121 in Mechanic Falls, eastbound, in the 1940s. Note where the Rexall Drug sign is (at the Merrill & Denning drug store): in this view, we are looking at the other side. The old truss bridge over the Little Androscoggin River is visible here; it was replaced by the present-day 1949 concrete bridge which is itself structurally inadequate and scheduled for replacement yet again.
