Notes and History |
Not designated until 1959, ME 69 is a weird oblique route through the southern
central coast from Winterport to Pittsfield designated completely on
new routing except for its useless multiplex with ME 139 in Winterport.
Leaving Winterport, it deviates from ME 139 and
then passes through Carmel (partially with US 2), then
Plymouth and Detroit, and finally into Pittsfield. It is little modified from
its initial signage; the only significant realignment was its junction with
I-95 and ME 143 at exit 167 near Etna, where a stub alignment can be seen
of the old road bed "crossing" the Interstate.
Apparently, ME 69 has a bad
reputation [.pdf] with truckers in winter (not like
any Maine road would be a picnic in January, however).
