Notes and History |
ME 4A has two segments, both former alignments.
- Sanford (6.5 miles).
This segment is fairly unnecessary in the present time as
it is completely routed with other, more extensive
regional highways (Main St/ME 109 into
Sanford, then Winter St/US 202 exiting town as the Carl Broggi Hwy/Sanford
Rd back to ME 4/Jordan Springs Rd).
As it was when it was ME 4,
the northeastern portion with US 202 was formerly a small portion of NEI 11
(and lettered highway U).
However, the Sanford ME 4A first existed
as the bypass alignment between South Sanford and Alfred that ME 4 travels
today; this alignment is shown under construction during the late 1930s and
was designed as ME 4A in 1940-1. Both routes can be seen at this phase in
the 1944 topo (warning:
large image). The designations did not switch to yield their respective
modern routings until 1946-7.
- Hollis-Bar Mills-Buxton
(4.0 miles). Another quasi-business loop, this routing
stands alone up along Main St/ME 35 to Bar Mills Rd, then east to Main
St through Bar Mills back to the Narrangansett Trail ME 4/US 202. It was
first designated in 1937-8 over the previous alignment of ME 4/US 202,
which were moved to a southern bypass routing.
