Notes and History

A central-state arterial designated after the Maine Great Renumbering, ME 43 is a local east-west connector running largely parallel to US 2 with a very tangled hodge-podge routing, most of it new or shared. Starting in Temple on new routing (more on this in a moment), it moves east through West Farmington along Mill St and Bridge St to US 2/ME 4, joining ME 27 up Main St in Farmington and leaving east on Perham St, now again on new routing. From there it passes through Starks to Madison, incorporating several sharp turns and co-routing with ME 148 into Anson, crossing the Kennebec into Madison with ME 148 and US 201 (later US 201A, and also later with ME 8). In Madison, once over the bridge, it left the city on Weston Ave and Park St again on new routing, crossing modern US 201 near South Solon, and intersecting ME 150 near Athens. Entering Athens with ME 150, it then exits again with ME 151 to Hartland, where it switches to ME 152 and ME 24 (now ME 23) to Saint Albans, and from St Albans with ME 24 (now ME 23) until ME 24 (now ME 23) leaves near Indian Pond. Continuing on new routing to the quasi-five-way intersection in Corinna, it connects with ME 11 along the old ME 100 corridor and several sharp near right angle turns through Exeter to Corinth and ME 15. In Corinth, all three routes are cosigned briefly through the town centre; ME 43 leaves again on new routing to near Hudson, joins with ME 221 through Hudson, and then leaves again on new routing and a new Penobscot River crossing to encompass the routing of former ME 206 and its terminus at US 2 in Old Town. Despite its circuitousness, the routing has remained remarkably stable over the years.

ME 43's western terminus is curious as it just "stops" in the middle of the town of Temple. It appears that its terminus has always been the intersection of Temple Rd, Intervale Rd and Cummings Hill Rd based on topo and general atlas evidence going back as far as 1956, although for some reason NAVTEQ continues it northwest on Intervale and Day Mountain Rds and then abruptly up Jackson Mountain Rd to terminate. There is a small lake there, but no other obvious reason why that particular point should be marked as the end, and no map evidence to support such an extension.
