Notes and History

Maine's newest route as of this writing, ME 26A doesn't even appear in the 2006 route log as it was opened on 16 November 2006. Designed to reduce traffic in the congested Gray village sector, the routing diverges southwest off mainline ME 26 and down ME 4/ME 115/US 202 to the new bypass, which it turns onto northwesterly to intersect ME 26 north of town past Interstate 95. Despite not being numbered as the mainline route, it is clearly the preferred routing as ME 26 at the north end is the route that must yield to ME 26A, not the other way around. It is certainly possible that the designations could switch in the next several years.

The statistics and termini above are based on map analysis and are not official figures. Thanks to Eric Bryant for being our man in Nirvana, if Gray qualifies as such.
