Notes and History |
ME 236 appears to have always occupied its current routing since its initial
designation in 1957 partially on the former alignment of ME 103
between Berwick at ME 9 and Kittery at ME 103. Only the portion
between Berwick and Gould Corner is former ME 103;
the remaining alignment from there to Kittery was newly designated.
Although the administrative definition does not co-route ME 236 with ME 9 to
enter New Hampshire in Berwick, there is an NH 236 that splits off NH 9 shortly
after the state line.
ME 236 and ME 103 are interesting that each one terminates at the other.

Kittery split. US 1 and ME 236 are accessed on the left fork via traffic circle, while US 1BYP exits right to the controlled-access alignment serving Kittery into Portsmouth, NH. The white truck weight sign explains why US 1BYP continues to exist. |
