Notes and History
ME 231 appears to have always occupied its current routing since its initial designation in 1954 on new routing between North Yarmouth at ME 115 and New Gloucester at ME 4/ME 100/US 202. Along its routing was the former Maine State School for the Feebleminded near Pownal, which was elided to simply the Pownal State School by the 1950s; it is seen on the routing as late as 1966 but it is unclear if the facility still operates today.
