Notes and History |
Maine's only official Truck routing is a bit of a mystery; it does not appear
in route logs until the 1965 edition, meaning it was likely commissioned in
1964 (although it may have existed prior unofficially). Running between
ME 164 and ME 228 proper in Washburn, it was only about 0.6 miles long
and thus ensured it would not appear on any regional map. It is unclear
when it was decommissioned (it still appears on the last publicly published
route log in 1967, but does not appear on the 1966/8 general atlas [1966
survey but 1968 highway data]), or if
Truck 228 was incorporated into ME 228 proper or if the highway was upgraded
and the truck routing simply abandoned. If the latter, one suspect that meets
the termini and would be about the right length is Victoria St. T is not
an official MDOT suffix but it is not known if it was even bannered with any
special endorsement or, as is typical, signed as simply "TO 228."
