Notes and History
ME 228 appears to have always occupied its current routing since its initial designation in 1939-40 on new routing between Washburn at ME 164 and Caribou at ME 161 using a "V" routing with Spaulding as the vertex. It is noteworthy for having had a Truck routing, the only such routing that ever existed in the Maine highway system (ME 228T).
