Notes and History
ME 227 appears to have always occupied its current routing since its initial designation in 1939-40 on new routing between Ashland at ME 11 and Presque Isle at ME 163 via Castle Hill. In 1994 ME 163's new northern bypass was partially cosigned along ME 227, yielding a useless multiplex; see ME 163.
