Notes and History
ME 226 appears to have always occupied its current routing since its initial designation in 1934 on new routing between Randolph at ME 9/ME 27 and Chelsea at ME 17. Although the road was constructed and shown as improved highway on the 1934 official map, it did not receive its route number until later that year (and appeared as such on the 1935 map). Its routing served the National Soldiers' Home, established in 1866 as part of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers mandate created by Congress in 1865 with the close of the Civil War. Merged into the Veterans Administration after its formation in 1930, today the National Home is now the Togus VA Medical Center.
