Notes and History

ME 220 as originally designated in 1929 ran on new routing between South Warren at US 1 and Thorndike at ME 139 on a strange routing via a "V"-bend at Friendship. Nevertheless, not only did it survive the Maine Great Renumbering, but it was also lengthened along ME 139 to ME 9 in Unity (formerly ME 138, now ME 9/US 202) and then up into and through Troy and Detroit to intersect ME 11/ME 100 between Pittsfield and Newport at the corner of Ox Bow and Hurds Corner Rds. In 1949, the other end of the "V" from Friendship to South Warren was cut off and became the major portion of new route ME 97; ME 97's terminus at the coast was added at that time and was not a prior part of ME 220. ME 220 has remained on its new routing since.
