Notes and History

ME 210 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Fryeburg at ME 18 (now US 302) and near North Waterford at ME 118 via Lovell and North Lovell. After the Maine Great Renumbering, this routing became part of new route ME 5 and the number lapsed until 1937-8 when it was applied to its current routing, a loop around northern Presque Isle terminating at ME 164 and US 1 in the south, going northeast in an arc, and then turning back west to US 1. Originally this was a service road for the Northern Maine Sanitarium, one of the old-fashioned tuberculosis treatment facilities (here is an obituary referencing the sanitarium; look at ME 124 for a similarly purposed route); interestingly, this Sanitarium outlasted many of the others, appearing to still be open as late as the 1970s. After its closure, ME 210 remained to service the northern community west of the Aroostock River.
