Notes and History

ME 208 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Biddeford at ME 11 (now ME 111) and Biddeford Pool, using a hooked routing at the end of the Pool. The 1913 report is not very clear, but this may have been a portion of former lettered highway U. Although it kept its number after the Maine Great Renumbering, almost the entire routing was co-assigned to ME 9 except for the "hook" and portion adjacent making most of its alignment yet another big useless multiplex. Although tantalizing, close analysis of early state maps show that the alignment along Hills Beach Rd and the University of New England-Biddeford was never part of the routing However, the alignments along Old Pool Rd, Meeting House Rd and Sokakis Rds are former alignments, seen on the 1944 topo (warning: large image); they are also seen on the 1956 topo (warning: large image) as well, but the modern routing appears in the 1964 general atlas, concurring with mileage comparison that shows a significant shift that same year. The routing has since remained unchanged.
