Notes and History
ME 204 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Kennebunkport at ME 218 (now ME 9) and Kennebunk at US 1. After the Maine Great Renumbering, this entire alignment became part of new route ME 35, as well as part of ME 9A between Kennebunkport and Kennebunk, and the number lapsed until 1936 when it was given to a new routing very similar to its current one from just north of Trenton along ME 3 to cross ME 184 and terminate at Marlboro along the beach. Roughly the same length then as today, there have been some subtle changes in its alignment which are difficult to time-fix, particularly around the ME 184 intersection. Interestingly, its routing in Marlboro is along Partridge Cove Rd and down Marlboro Beach Rd to terminate at the water's edge in a quasi-U; the obvious cutoff routing along Raccoon Cove Rd may have been a prior alignment (uncertain).
