Notes and History |
Here are the individual segments that are, or once were, signed as US 1
Business in Maine listed from longest to shortest:
- Freeport (decommissioned; 3.6 miles).
This Business US 1 existed as the former alignment
of US 1 and was first designated in 1951 when the US 1 bypass was
built (see US 1 for more information on the bypass alignment).
After the designation of the US 1 bypass as part of the I-95
corridor (now part of Interstate 295) in 1957, US 1 remained on the
bypass alignment until US 1B was decommissioned in 1960; at that
point, US 1 was transferred back to its former routing.
Some maps incorrectly
show this as US 1A, although it appeared as US 1B in the route logs.
- Newcastle-Damariscotta (3.4 miles).
This is the only extant Business US 1 remaining in Maine
and was designated in 1963 over the former alignment of
US 1. The business route proceeds off the mainline
as ME 215/US 1B and then down
Main St to rejoin US 1 on the northeast side of Damariscotta.
Interestingly, a "BUSINESS 1B" is signed in at least one place
(courtesy Eric
Bryant).
- Bangor (decommissioned; 2.6 miles).
This alignment existed only briefly as Business US 1
in 1954, signed over a modification of the previous alignment of US 1
(US 1 having shifted to the old then-US 1A). Its routing was (east to
west from Brewer) along State St, across on Washington St, up Exchange and
Harlow Sts, down Central and Main Sts, and rejoining US 1 at Railroad St; the
1955 official map incorrectly shows this as US 1A, but correctly calls it
US 1B in the actual route log.
This alignment then became US 1AB with the switch in designations of
US 1A in 1955. For more history of this alignment, see US 1A.
