Notes and History |
Prior to their respective designations as US 1A, the Mars Hill-Presque Isle alignment (the exception, which became US 1A but is now US 1), the Jonesboro-Machias alignment, the York Corner-Cape Neddick alignment and the Harrington-Milbridge alignment were signed as State Route 1A. The York alignment was designated in 1926 over the old routing of US 1 (shown as under construction as early as 1925), and the Milbridge and Mars Hill alignments all were designated in 1928; the Machias alignment appears to have been designated in 1931 although it does not appear in the route log in 1932 despite being shown on the map. This designation was dropped when they became full-fledged US Highway or US Highway Alternate alignments later. See US 1A and US 1 for additional history on these alignments. |
