Business US 1A (Business Alternate US 1? Alternate Business US 1? sheesh!)
was one of the few "double-bannered" routes in the United States, a shame since
it may not have ever been signed. US 1AB was first designated in 1955 over what
was originally signed as US 1B and before that US 1A (see respective
entries) -- and largely US 1 itself before that (but see US 1A).
Its routing as designated was northwesterly from US 1A as State St, over the
Penobscot River to become Oak St, then west on Washington St, up Exchange
and Harlow Sts, down Central and Main Sts and rejoining US 1A at Railroad
St. Due to Central St now being one-way, EB traffic now uses State
St (east of Hammond St and Main St) with US 2.
This alignment is no longer numbered highway and although the MDOT 2002
route log makes references to it at intersections, it does not list it as
an independent business alignment. Nevertheless, NAVTEQ and other sources
continue to display the alignment despite it not having been signed for years.
There is a reference in the 2005 AADT report
to a highway US 1C, which is probably the old routing. Interestingly, the
2006 route log still uses it as a terminus for ME 178.
A 1956 route log makes a probably erroneous reference to a Business 1A under the log for ME 125. This does not appear under the US 1 or US 1A entries, nor on the map. Other national BR US ALTs have included Business Alternate US 58 (BR US 58A) in Norton, VA, which is signed. |
