Notes and History |
ME 195 (ME 195SH) is Maine's only remaining duplicate highway number. It ran
as originally signed in 1925 between Jackman Station at NEI 20 (now US 201)
and Long Pond, where it terminated into local road. In 1930-1 it
was extended to Rockwood where it received the Moosehead Lake ferry
from ME 105, which
subsequently became ME 15 after the Maine Great Renumbering. Between 1933 and
1934 ME 15 was extended north in stages to Rockwood, setting the stage for
ME 195 to be decommissioned in 1940-1 and added to ME 15. After that, the
number lapsed until 1946-7 when it was placed on a new five-mile routing
between US 1 near West Gouldsboro and ME 186 at Prospect Harbor, extending
it out to Crowley Island via Corea Rd and Crowley Island Rd in 1951.
Between 1956 and 1960, ME 195 was shortened to the corner of Crowley Island Rd
and Corea Rd, its terminus today. NAVTEQ continues to carry it on its old
routing. Unlike
ME 95SH, which was decommissioned due to the appearance of Interstate 95,
ME 195 was allowed to keep its number even after Interstate 195 was opened
for traffic in 1983. To be sure, no other Maine highways ever encroached on any
other Interstate numbers, so maybe it was just something about I-95.
