Notes and History

Maine's youngest Interstate, Interstate 195 is a small spur of Interstate 95 in Saco. Despite its relative youth (construction did not start until 1980), the Saco Industrial Spur had actually been on the books as early as the 1950s at the behest of Saco's declining business climate. Nevertheless, construction was delayed for decades due to funding -- compare with I-395 -- until initial work began on the first section from Industrial Park Rd to I-195's east terminus at ME 5 in Old Orchard Beach and this two-lane-per-direction partial alignment opened to traffic in 1982. The final connection to the Maine Turnpike/I-95 and construction of the toll plaza were finished in 1983. Then, as now, the highway's east terminus is at ME 5 on Ocean Park Rd. (See ME 5 for an irregularity.)

The "trumpet" interchange with I-95 is actually a partially completed cloverleaf. An additional obliterated movement can be seen on the western side of the interchange, hinting at a possible future extension or a planned one that never got completed.

Although the actual road surface is longer than the 1.55 miles listed in the route logs, the western terminus is actually the toll plaza. For some reason, the mileage west of there is maintained separately and is not charged to I-195. The 2002 log also shows this distance, but gives the western terminus as I-95 and the eastern terminus as short at US 1, which actually doesn't measure correctly.

Interstate 195 is the only Interstate or US highway in Maine to still have a numbering collision -- see ME 195SH.

Exit List

Although I-195 was technically affected by the 2004 exit renumbering (see I-95), its exits were already approximately one mile apart and did not change. Exit descriptions are designed to be informational only and may not match signage.

  • 2A. US 1 (SB)/ME 5, Saco/Old Orchard Beach
