Notes and History

ME 192 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Machias at NEI 1 (now US 1) and Grove (near Cooper) at ME 191 via Wesley. It appears to have always terminated at NEI 1 and later US 1 in Machias, but never at the later US 1A. Its original routing proceeded due west from ME 191 at Grove along what is now Old Crawford Rd and Love Lake Rd around the northern shore of Love Lake, then more or less southwesterly along what is ME 9 now to Wesley and the modern terminus of ME 192, and from there south through Northfield into Machias. In 1927, the portion along Love Lake was decommissioned in favour of a new northern routing through Crawford and into Alexander to US 1 at Baring. After the Maine Great Renumbering, the section from Wesley to Baring became part of the extended ME 9, leaving ME 192 at its present terminus and current routing; the Love Lake alignment no longer remains numbered highway.
