Notes and History

ME 176 as originally designated in 1925 looped through Brooksville, terminating at ME 175 on both ends (probably at the corner of Franks Flat and Coastal Rd on the north end, and at its southern terminus today at the corner of Coastal Rd and Bagaduce Rd). This small routing appears to have persisted through the Maine Great Renumbering for a total length of around ten miles. In 1955, this was extended on the north end over Franks Flat and ME 175, then south along new alignment through Oak Hill to ME 172 (now ME 15), northeasterly up ME 172 (ME 15) into Blue Hill, along new alignment on the west side of Blue Hill Bay to cross modern ME 172 west of Surry, and finally to terminate at US 1/ME 3 north of Toddy Pond. This routing persists today.
