Termini and Mileage (2006) |
|
Notes and History |
ME 175 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Orland at ME 106 (now
ME 15/US 1) and Blue Hill, again at ME 106 (now also ME 15, and
the junction of ME 172 and ME 176), via North
Castine, Penobscot, Sargentville
(bypassing Brooksville), West Brooklin, Haven, North Brooklin
and South Blue Hill along a very complicated "W" routing. It did not
enter Castine; see ME 202SH.
After the Maine Great Renumbering, ME 175 was routed west on new ME 15 and then up along new routing to East Holden (crossing US 1, now US 1A) to go along the west side of Holbrook Pond and Davis Pond along old ME 193 to ME 9 west of East Eddington. Possibly due to flooding or other unsuitabilities, this alignment was shifted to the east side of the ponds and directly into East Eddington by 1936; the old alignment is unclear but seems to be Clark Hill Rd at least in part. From 1939 to 1941 it underwent several complex reconfigurations in Castine, shifting it to the more northern link routing which it uses today; see ME 166 for the history of the former alignments. Originally, ME 175 (and ME 172) approached Blue Hill along what is now signed Parker Point Rd, with ME 177 carrying an alignment on South St down to meet it after 1940-1 (see the 1944 topo [warning: large image]). By 1957, ME 172/ME 175 had moved to the South Street alignment, and ME 177 moved to its present-day routing and terminus along Union St (see the 1957 topo [warning: large image]), with the old Parker Point Rd alignment ceasing to be numbered highway. In 1960, the Orland-East Eddington routing north of US 1/ME 15 was cut off and handed to new route ME 46, and ME 175 was truncated to Orland at its then-northern terminus which is today the intersection of Castine Rd and Old County Rd, the former alignment of US 1/ME 3/ME 15. This terminus lasted only a couple years at most until the construction of the US 1 bypass; see US 1. |
