Notes and History |
ME 174 as originally designated in 1925 ran between East Orland at
ME 106 (now ME 15) and Ellsworth, again at
ME 106 (but now ME 172).
With the construction of the Waldo-Hancock Bridge in 1931 across the
Penobscot River Narrows (see US 1),
the entire alignment was added to ME 102
(which would become ME 3 after the Maine Great Renumbering and
later cosigned with US 1 after the change in US 1A designations;
see those entries for the history of the designation switch); the number
was instead applied to the small stub it occupies today near Prospect,
although as originally designated it crossed the Waldo-Hancock into
Bucksport and terminated there. Somewhere
between 1956 and 1960 ME 174's terminus was brought back to the western
end of the bridge; the exact year is not known due to the 10-mile policy
(see the disclaimer). By 1961 its routing
was more or less the same as today's, although with
the opening of the new Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory replacing
the old crossing in 2006, the terminus was shifted slightly south to
compensate (see US 1).
