Termini and Mileage (2006) |

Notes and History |
ME 173 as originally designated in 1925 was a small cutoff running between South Lincoln at NEI 15 (now US 2) and just west of Enfield at ME 172 (now ME 155/ME 188). After the Maine Great Renumbering, this routing persisted until 1951, when the number was decommissioned and the old routing added to ME 188; the route was reincarnated on its current routing in 1953. Originally terminating at US 1 on the southeast end (in Lincolnville) and at ME 3 on the northwest end, the route was extended slightly east to the Lincolnville ferry in 1955 and then to ME 220 in 1963. After ME 3 was shifted north to its present bypass alignment in Liberty/Montville in 1958 (see ME 3), the route's terminus was shifted up along the vacated routing, partially with ME 220, to still terminate at ME 3. |
