Notes and History |
ME 172 as originally designated in 1925 ran between West
Enfield at NEI 15 (now US 2)
and Grand Falls Plt east of Burlington, where it terminated into private road.
In 1931, this entire alignment became part of the new ME 100 (and is now
ME 188) and the number lapsed until
after the Maine Great Renumbering, when it was applied
to new routing between Blue Hill and Sargentville via Sedgwick (cosigned with
ME 175 for a few miles out of Blue Hill and then again from Sedgwick
to Sargentville), then across a
ferry to Deer Isle and terminating at Stonington. Its terminus in Stonington
seems to have been where ME 15 ends now, at the intersection of N and W
Main Sts and School St.
In 1946-7,
ME 15 was cut back to Blue Hill and ME 172 was extended further north to
Ellsworth along the vacated alignment. The alignment approaching Blue Hill
with ME 175 was partially changed afterwards; see ME 175.
However, ME 15 would get the last
laugh in 1963 when it took over ME 172's old terminus in Stonington using a
complex extension in routings, coming south first on ME 176, then
new alignment and finally
ME 175 to Sargentville and then to Deer Isle, while ME 172 would be
cut back to Sedgwick at ME 175. For some reason, however, the portion
between ME 175 and ME 175 (not a typo)
north of Sedgwick was not officially part of the
routing until 1966.
