ME 167 as originally designated
in 1925 ran between Lincoln at NEI 15 (now US 2) and the Canadian/New
Brunswick border at Vanceboro via Topsfield. After the Maine Great
Renumbering, this routing became part of new route ME 16 and the number
lapsed until 1936 when it was assigned to a new routing from Presque Isle
(see ME 163) to then-ME 165 (now US 1A) south of
Fort Fairfield. Originally entering Presque Isle along ME 163's
initial routing into town on Blake and Fort Sts; it eventually moved north
to North St (see ME 163 for the history of these alignments), which it now
inhabits alone.
In 1940, with the designation
of US 1A over that section of old ME 161, ME 167 was given the
orphaned alignment of ME 161 from Fort Fairfield to the Canadian border
(which it kept even after US 1A was moved to take over the rest of old
ME 165 later) by co-routing it along with US 1A into Fort Fairfield,
and it still crosses into New Brunswick today as NB 167.
ME 167's original routing into Fort Fairfield was via Conant Rd, and the
US 1A/ME 167 junction was at the corner of Conant and what is now
Presque Isle St. Approximately 1984-6, ME 167 was shifted south to a shortened
cutoff alignment along Fort Fairfield Rd and the US 1A junction moved
to its present location. NAVTEQ continues to show
both
routings.
