Notes and History |
ME 164 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Presque Isle at NEI 24 (now
US 1) and Maplegrove at ME 165 (now US 1A). After the Maine Great
Renumbering, this alignment was added to ME 163 and the number
lapsed until 1936 when it was placed onto a loop routing between Caribou and
north of Presque Isle using new alignment, via Washburn. It is not clear
at all how this routing approached Caribou; modern ME 164 comes in via
Washburn St, but there is an equally valid-appearing alignment on York St and
few detailed maps of the area to disambiguate (the
1953 topo [warning:
large image] shows both and signs neither). However, the 1966 general atlas
shows the Washburn St alignment definitely in use by that
time. This routing persisted unil
the completion of the US 1 bypass in Caribou (see US 1) in the early
1970s when ME 164 was
extended south to pick up the old routing of US 1 along Main St
back down to US 1 at Riverside Dr, Main St and Dow Siding Rd. Note that
ME 164 does not cover the entireity of the former US 1 routing; the portion
north of Fort St is also partially ME 161, and the portion north of ME 161
at Herschel St is no longer state highway.
