Notes and History |
ME 15A was a bypass alignment between Corinth and the west side of Charleston,
avoiding Charleston Centre to which ME 15 was originally routed with
then-ME 11. First designated in 1950, it persisted until 1960 until it
was decommissioned and ME 15 shifted to it, leaving ME 11 alone on the
Charleston alignment (but see ME 11A).
Strangely, it continues to appear on some maps, though not
official state maps, well into the 1970s; another interesting thing is that an
alignment corresponding to the future routing existed as far back as 1935,
so the idea wasn't new.
JP Kirby mentions 15A may also have been a
later designation for former ME 172A when ME 172 south of Sedgwick
was truncated in favour of ME 15. This does not appear on
any of my route logs.

ME 11 at modern ME 15, former ME 15A. Previously, ME 15 was co-routed along ME 11 north (this picture faces south) into Charleston; ME 15A was built heading off to the right. ME 15 was subsequently transferred to ME 15A and the alternate designation was removed. |
