Notes and History |
ME 158 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Sherman-Woodbridge Corner at NEI 15 (now US 2) and Fort Kent at ME 160 (now US 1), via Ashland and Eagle Lake, part of the large former lettered highway K from former ME 211 north. An early 1924 pre-signage map shows ME 158 routed through Island Falls and Crystal partially along what is now ME 159, along with a routing through Batesville now signed as Retreat Rd, Champion Paper Rd and Mill Rd (not numbered highway today), but this does not appear on the 1925 route log. After the Maine Great Renumbering, this long alignment was almost entirely consumed by new route ME 11 except for the portion between Sherman and US 2, which was the only part to remain ME 158 as is the case today. |
