Notes and History
ME 156 as originally designated in 1925 ran between LaGrange at ME 155 (now the junction of ME 6, ME 16 and ME 155) and West Enfield at NEI 15 (now US 2). In 1929, this entire routing became part of the re-routed ME 154 (see ME 154 for the remaining history) and the number was transferred to new routing between Weld at ME 142 and Wilton at US 2/ME 107 (now US 2/ME 4). Surviving the Maine Great Renumbering, its routing was extended further across US 2 in Wilton into Beans Corner in 1939-40, then up and north of Chesterville along what is now Chesterfield Rd and Lucy Knowles Rd to terminate at ME 41 in 1951. It has remained on this routing since.
