Notes and History

ME 155 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Orono at NEI 15 (now US 2) and Milo at ME 154 (now the junction of routes ME 6, ME 11 and ME 16) via Alton and LaGrange. An early pre-signage 1924 map shows the routing entering Old Town instead; this alignment, east of what was then ME 154 and is now ME 16, is now part of ME 43. In 1928, ME 155 was shortened to LaGrange and the orphaned portion became part of the re-routed ME 154 (see ME 154 for the remaining history). Surviving the Maine Great Renumbering, this routing persisted until 1955 when it was transferred to ME 16 and the number moved to take up the old routing of ME 11 -- i.e., old ME 156 -- between LaGrange and Howland (today co-signed with ME 6), extending it through Howland-Enfield up the old ME 16 alignment to Lincoln, plus another new alignment from LaGrange into Bradford. Originally leaving LaGrange southwesterly on Mill St, the first incarnation of this alignment became and remained on LaGrange Rd into north Bradford, persisting until approximately 1985 when it was shunted south on Storer Rd through Bradford Center and then west on E Rd to ME 11/ME 221 where it presently terminates.
