Notes and History |
ME 153 as originally designated in 1925 ran between St. Albans at ME 152 and Dexter at ME 104 (now ME 7). After the Maine Great Renumbering, this alignment became part of new route ME 24 and today is ME 23; the number was then reassigned to a new routing between Dover-Foxcroft and Greeley's Landing on Sebec Lake which persists today. ME 153 has nothing to do with NH 153; when NH 153 crosses the border into Maine, it does not do so as numbered highway (although it is state-maintained road) and has never been part of ME 153's routing despite returning to NH 153 on the other side. However, there are signs up in Maine, probably as a motorist aid, although they are of a very old vintage -- here is one example photographed by the Comrade. This situation is analogous to ME 113. |
