Notes and History

ME 149 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Bingham at NEI 20 (now US 201) and Abbot-Monson Junction at ME 104 (now ME 6/ME 15). It is unclear if its terminus was affected by very early changes to ME 104, but its junction in Abbott seems to have been the same since 1925. After the Maine Great Renumbering, the entire alignment became part of new route ME 16 and the number was reassigned to new routing on a small minor alignment through Flagstaff, between ME 16 and ME 4. After the construction of the Flagstaff Dam on the Dead River in 1949 (see ME 16), the town of Flagstaff and the routing of ME 149 were literally drowned and the number lapsed until 1951 when it was assigned to its current routing.
