Notes and History |
ME 144 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Rangeley at ME 107
(now the junction of ME 4 and ME 16) and North Anson at NEI 20 (later
US 201, now US 201A), via
Stratton, south of Flagstaff in an arc down to North New Portland, then
south and east to North Anson. In 1931, it was cut back to Stratton and
the orphaned alignment became part of new route ME 4; after the Maine
Great Renumbering, its remaining alignment
became part of new route ME 16 and the
number lapsed until 1937-8 when it was given to the old stub of ME 107
between
Oquossoc and Haines Landing. In 1951 this routing lapsed too when it was
assimilated into ME 4 and the number once again lay dormant until 1954 when
it was given its present-day routing between US 1 at Wiscasset and the
intersection of Main and Shore Rds near the tip of Westport Island. Per
Eric Bryant, there is no signage past the bridge onto Westport Island
heading to its southern terminus.
