Notes and History

ME 143 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Fairbanks at ME 107 (now ME 4/ME 27) and Eustis, at which it ended abruptly without continuation of the routing via New Vineyard, Kingfield and Stratton, although an early pre-signage 1924 map shows it terminating in Strong via New Vineyard (along what is now ME 234). In 1931, it was cut back to Eustis and its former routing became part of new route ME 4; after the Maine Great Renumbering, the entire remaining routing became part of new route ME 27 and the number lapsed until 1937-8 when it was placed on the modern routing which it has maintained since.

Old ME 143 does not appear to have been routed on the Wire Bridge in New Portland; see ME 27. ME 143 also followed Old Kingsfield Rd in New Portland; again, see ME 27.

ME 27 does not follow ME 143's original routing in Kingfield; see ME 142. It also does not follow it in New Portland; the 1932 topo (warning: large image) shows the old alignment on what is now Old Kingfield Rd. The modern bypass is seen by the 1964/1966 general atlas.
