Notes and History

ME 140 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Belgrade at ME 100 (now ME 8/ME 11) and New Sharon at NEI 15 (now US 2), corresponding to former lettered highway W. A 1932 Socony map shows it all the way to Augusta, but this is probably an error as ME 100 was well-established on that routing by then. After the Maine Great Renumbering, this alignment became part of new route ME 27 and ME 140 was assigned to a new routing between Jay, where it still terminates today, and West Paris via Canton and Hartford. Between 1941-2, it was shifted to its current terminus at Buckfield via new alignment to ME 117 and the old alignment to West Paris was incorporated into ME 219's extension to Greenwood. The termini have remained since.
