Notes and History |
ME 136 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Oakland at ME 100 (now ME 11) and Norridgewock at NEI 15 (now US 2), via a 90-degree bend between North Belgrade and Smithfield. After the Maine Great Renumbering, this alignment was added to ME 137 and ME 136 was moved to its current routing using largely new alignment between US 1 at Freeport and Auburn. A 1944 topo map (warning: large image) demonstrates that the original alignment was the (now bisected by I-95, presently I-295) True St/Kendall Ln couplet, as opposed to Mallet Dr which is used by both ME 136 and ME 125 today; see ME 125 for the history of their co-routing in Freeport. ME 136's routing remains unchanged since. |
