Notes and History

ME 135 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Winthrop at ME 100 (now ME 100/US 202) and Belgrade at ME 140 (now ME 8/ME 11). After the Maine Great Renumbering, the northern end at Belgrade was extended up portions of new alignment and portions of ME 137 (itself incorporating the prior alignment of ME 136), deviating from ME 137 at Smithfield along a new alignment to US 2 near Mercer. This alignment was extended in 1937-8 south to Monmouth and the newly resurrected ME 132.

In 1954, ME 8 was "created" (in its fashion) and cosigned partially with ME 137 in the region; between 1954-5 (the maps and route logs don't make this clear) ME 8 was placed on the old ME 137 routing directly to Norridgewock, ME 137 was placed onto the old ME 135 routing to US 2 northwesterly from Smithfield, and ME 135 itself was cut back to its old terminus in Belgrade. The route has remained unchanged since then, although it is still an open question exactly what the original routing of ME 8 was.
