Notes and History

ME 126 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Lewiston at ME 100 (now ME 100/US 202) and Richmond Corner at NEI 20 (now US 201), although one early 1924 pre-signage map indicates it was already routed to Gardiner. By 1929, this "spur" officially became part of the routing and was further extended on to Jefferson at ME 132 (now ME 32), with the old alignment to US 201 at Richmond Corner added as an extension to ME 197. After the Great Renumbering, ME 126 was extended to its modern full extent at ME 220 along new routing and has since remained unchanged.
