Notes and History

ME 125 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Bowdoinham at NEI 20 (now US 201) and Lisbon Falls at ME 196 (now ME 9/ME 196). Surviving the Maine Great Renumbering, it was extended in 1955 along new routing to Freeport at was then US 1B, and is now US 1; the old alignment proceeds off the main routing at Griffin Rd, continuing as Woodside Ln to I-295, where it is obliterated. This is where it crossed US 1 when US 1 was routed on the bypass alignment that later became I-95 and now I-295; see US 1. On the other side of the freeway, it continued as Noble Dr to US 1, which was then US 1B, and terminated for a length of roughly 20 miles.

After full conversion of the US 1/I-95/I-295 alignment into controlled access bisected the routing, ME 125 was shifted onto Griffin Rd to ME 136 and followed ME 136 down Durham Rd and down Mallet Dr across the freeway for both routes to terminate at US 1. Route log comparison seems to show this happening between 1960-1, but the 1957 topo (warning: large image) shows the co-routing already consummated. Regardless, this legislative action added two miles more to yield the current route length and the alignment has remained unchanged since.
