Notes and History |
ME 118 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Norway and Bethel, with
both termini at NEI 26 (now ME 26), using a V-"bend" near North Waterford.
Its routing in Bethel was slightly different than modern ME 5; see ME 5.
After the Maine Great Renumbering, the portion
north of N. Waterford was co-signed with the new ME 35 and portions
ME 5; in 1937-8, its
western terminus was brought back
to the Waterford "bend" instead and the orphaned
alignment entirely signed over to ME 35. ME 35 was later moved to
a different alignment north of North Waterford; see ME 35.
As for the eastern terminus, originally ME 118 ended at ME 117 at what is
now the corner of Lake and Harrison. Sometime in the 1970s/1980s, the
cosignage was extended an extra two miles east to the corner of Main and
Paris, which remains its routing today; the exact date of this change is
unclear.
