History as Pole Highway (1919-1925)
As originally designated, ME 116 incorporated the Green Poland Springs-White Mountain Trail from Naples to Poland.

Notes and History
ME 116 as originally designated in 1925 ran between Naples at NEI 18 (now US 302) and Mechanic Falls at ME 121. After the Maine Great Renumbering, ME 116 was moved to its present routing between Medway at ME 157 and Old Town at ME 155 (now ME 16) via Chester, Howland and Edinburg and the old routing in its entirely became part of the expanded ME 11. Part of the routing, between I-95 (at N Howland Rd) and ME 6/ME 155 at Howland, was once ME 154 and later ME 16; this was cosigned with ME 16 until ME 16 was truncated in 1949 (later taking over ME 155's corridor; see ME 155).
