Notes and History

ME 113 is unique for its bizarre meandering routing back and forth over the state line, although as originally designated in 1925 it only ran between its modern southern terminus at Standish at NEI 25 (now ME 25) and Fryeburg at NEI 18 (now US 302). The later circuitous routing dancing out into New Hampshire and back into Maine to terminate in Gilead at US 2 was added partially in 1937 to Stow, crossing the border twice, and from Stow entering New Hampshire as what is now NH 113B [see "ME 113B"]; the old connector road to modern NH 113B is no longer numbered highway but is maintained as townway. Extended to Gilead and US 2 through Stow and crossing the border twice more, it reached its present-day extent in 1940-1 along the modern alignment.

In New Hampshire, examination of the routing of NH 113 shows it is actually unrelated to ME 113; this is a similar situation to ME 153, although the situation is more confused here as NH 113 is geographically close by.
