Regional and National Route Information

History as New England Interstate (1925)
Originally signed as part of NEI 11 between Alfred and Biddeford (the remainder in Maine being ME 11).

Notes and History

ME 111 as originally designated in 1925 ran between East Waterboro near ME 110 (approximately the junction of ME 5 and ME 4/US 202 today) and Gorham at NEI 25 (now ME 25). In 1931, this alignment in its entirety became part of new route ME 4 (and portions eventually part of ME 4A); after the Maine Great Renumbering, ME 111 was shifted to its current routing on the portion of former NEI 11 between Alfred and Biddeford. on former lettered highway U.

In Alfred, original ME 111 (and former NEI 11) branched from ME 4 at the junction of Saco Rd and Oak St (now ME 4/US 202), which was also probably the terminus for the longest extent of ME 224. This was later realigned to a southern bypass now signed as the Carl Broggi Highway; for the history of the Carl Broggi Hwy, see US 202. It is not clear when the realignment occurred, but it is not seen on the 1944 topo (warning: large image) while it does appear on the 1956 topo (warning: large image), meaning it occurred between those dates.
